Successful Humanitarian Groups Inspired by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin

Philanthropists have been in existence since time immemorial. This is because the injustices have been there all through. These are people who have decided to do the injustices that happen in the society their business. They donate their resources and sacrifice their time in an attempt to ensure everyone in the society enjoys justice.

Technology has led to an increased level of migration globally. This is because everyone can spot opportunities that are there in other states. Many investors are living as immigrants trying to make ends meet. Other people migrate to further their studies. The other group that migrates is the group that is running away from civil wars in their country.

As a result, immigrants’ rights continue to be violated. In some countries, the immigrants are denied the most basic needs. In a majority of the states, the immigrants are denied their democratic rights. The philanthropic fight to ensure that the human, civil, and immigrants’ rights are observed.

They also fight to eliminate the bad policies and replace them with good policies. The humanitarians also want to create a world with freedom of expression. They also fight against public and private discrimination of the immigrants.

Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was created by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. This duo is still the founders’ owners of ‘’The Phoenix New Times’’. They are renowned for the legal fights that they have won.

The Frontera Fund was begun by the money that the two acquired as apprehension compensation. This was after they wrote the story of his evil deeds on the front page of their paper.

When Sheriff Joe heard about it, he never took it kindly. He arrested them at midnight from their homes and drove them to a secret location.

Thanks to the effective Protestants of the residents, the two were released within 24 hours.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin took the case to court. The arrest was ruled as illegal because the required arrest procedure was not followed. Following this judgment, they received $3.75 million as compensation.

They used this money to start the Frontera Fund. The first beneficiaries of the scheme were the Arizona settlers.

The Frontera Funds supports the organizations that share their dream.

The DACA Foundation

The DACA Foundation helps the immigrants who have been settlers of the USA for long. They are given a two year period to stay in the country from their deportation time. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase and Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund

What the members decide to do with their time is not sated. They are given the liberty of making the decision. Some of them decide to complete their education while others chose to get the documents to remain in the country. When the two years end before the members accomplish their mission, they seek to get a renewal.

Many immigrants have benefited from this scheme. It has a total of 800000 members.

The Philanthropic groups have greatly improved the lives of the immigrants. DACA Foundation and the Frontera Fund are just examples of successful humanitarian organizations.

Fighting for Human Rights: Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund

Numerous non-governmental corporations are advocating for human, migrant, and civil rights. The foundations target those people that are facing discriminative acts including racial profiling. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: and

The organizations play a role in educating the victims on their rights and legal options to pursue among other tasks. Some of the renowned groups include the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under Law, The Advocates for Human Rights, Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund, and ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project.

Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under Law

The foundation is a non-profit and non-partisan group started in 1963 following ex-President John F. Kennedy’s request. The institution advocates for civil rights with the aim of getting rid of racial discrimination. The committee’s fundamental objective is to promote equal opportunities for the minority groups. It campaigns against the factors that lead to economic disparity and racial discrimination.

The organization represents African Americans in obtaining justice regarding any form of racial discrimination. Also, the institution serves those minority groups under the influence of economic disparity. The committee tries to secure equality in justice for all under the rule of law.

Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey started the foundation to provide financial aid to those corporations that advocate for immigrants’ human rights. The two journalists decided to use their 3.75 million dollars settlement money to fund other organizations. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are Phoenix New Times’ co-founders.

The settlement money followed their arrest by the county sheriff. Larkin and Lacey had published a story involving the county sheriff. Joe Arpaio, the county sheriff of Maricopa, ordered their arrest on 18th October 2007.

The two reporters got arrested from their home in the night and jailed because they revealed ongoing grand jury proceedings that were seeking information on articles involving the sheriff. Larkin and Lacey got imprisoned separately without a clue on why they got arrested. However, this was not the first time Arpaio had detained people without cause.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey had initially fought for first amendments rights implementation. Therefore, they won the case after filing a lawsuit against the county. The county compensated them with $3.75 million which they used to start their philanthropic organization.

Michael and Jim thought it wise to invest the money in helping other people fight injustices like their unlawful arrest within the community. The fund majorly targets the Hispanic population. The foundation supports different charities and non-profit organizations that fight for the civil and fundamental rights of people from the Hispanic society.

Bradesco Set To Choose New CEO

Bradesco bank is a leading financial firm in Brazil, located in Cidade de Deus. In terms of total assets, it is the second largest bank in Brazil. Founded in 1943 under the name Casa Bancaria & Almeida, Bradesco has been recognized as innovative. It was, in fact, the first bank to offer internet banking in the country. Today, the bank offers its services through channels such as Easy Phone Bradesco, ATM, Bradesco Celular, and Bradesco Internet Banking.

So far, Bradesco has 5,000 branches, 1.4 million shareholders, over 95,000 employees making it the country’s largest employer, and has the largest private network of self-service points. Bradesco was the largest private bank before being overtaken by the merge of Unibanco and Banco Itau in 2009. It was during this time that Luiz Carlos Trabuco scooped top leadership at the bank.

During this time, the bank was in a great struggle to reclaim its top position from the then born Itau Unibanco. When Luiz came in to be the CEO and the president of Bradesco, he began by galvanizing the human resource department towards realizing unfulfilled objectives. Luiz interest was not to just get the satisfaction of dislodging the firm’s competitor from the top position but to offer the high-profile services clients were looking for. To him, the need of being top did not override the desire to be the best in service provision.

What’s next for Bradesco Bank?

Fast forward to 2017, Trabuco now serves temporarily as both the CEO and chairman of the private lender. This came about after the resignation of the bank’s 91-year-old oldest serving bank chairman Lazaro de Mello Brandao. The chairman stepped down after serving the bank for over 75 years.

As has been the firm’s norm, rather than looking for talent elsewhere to occupy the position, an executive will be chosen from within to take over from March 2018. The bank is expected to select one person from its seven highest ranking executives.

Last year, the bank raised the maximum serving age for CEO’s, allowing Luiz to hold onto the position until 2019.The main contenders for the post are Alexandre Gluher, Mauricio Minas, Octavio Lazari, and Josue Pancini.

Who is Luiz Carlos Trabuco?

Luiz Carlos is the current Chief executive of the Bradesco bank in Brazil, having joined the company at the age of 22 to start off as a clerk. His rise to top leadership in the company can be attributed to his quick learning skills, an element which his then senior Amador Aguiar was able to see.

Luiz has served the bank for more than four decades, and this gives him an upper hand in handling the firm’s functions as they occur. He graduated with a degree in philosophy from Sao Paulo University and later completed his masters in socio-psychology.

His Career

In 1984, he won the post of marketing director and held administrative positions at the Bradesco bank such as leading the Bradesco Seguros in 2003. In his capacity, he made positive changes where an increase in profits was achieved.

For his contribution towards the growth of the insurance sector of the country, Luiz in 2003 and 2007 won the insurance personality of the year. Before his appointment as the bank’s CEO, he served as the vice president for six years. Rumors hold that after his retirement from the Bradesco Bank Luiz will be given a senior position in the government. President Dilma Rouseff is particularly said to show interest in appointing Luiz as the next Finance Minister.

Healthy, Sustainable, and Delicious: Waiakea Water

Bottled water has been known to cause pollution since the plastic bottles increase wastes in the environment. For many years, companies have always thought that the solution is to make the bottles stronger and degradable. Unfortunately, the plastics they use are compostable and not degradable. Waiakea Water has finally found the perfect solution for water bottles.

The First 100% Degradable Plastic Bottle in the World

Waiakea decided to do the opposite by using Timeplast nano-degradable additive, which makes the plastic weak rather than strong. The additive reduces the lifespan of the plastic, making it degradable after a short period. Waiakea will also chip in and chemically degrade it’s plastic, which is purely made from recycled bottles. They also convert the plastic into wax, which is fully biodegradable. The company will start using this world’s only fully degradable plastic next year.

Waiakea Volcanic Water Brand

Waiakea is a bottled water company that was started in 2012 by its founder, Ryan Emmons. Ryan discovered a sustainable water source in Hawaii Island whose water is rich in silica, sodium, magnesium, and potassium with an alkaline pH. The water is naturally generated using the power produced by volcanos. It goes over high volcanic rock collecting minerals along the way.

The Hawaii company is not only environmentally-conscious, but also known for its charity work. It takes the initiative to donate millions of liters of water to areas experiencing shortage. It distributes its water in Hawaii, throughout the US, and the outside countries too.

Being the fastest growing bottled water company in the US at a rate of 4200% in three years, it is evident that the company is fulfilling its mission of providing healthy, sustainable water to consumers and donating some to those in need.

The value of bottled water is not only in the taste, but also the contents, its source, the packaging and its effect on the environment.

Dr. Mark Holterman, Medical Visionary

Dr. Mark Holterman has blogged and written extensively about subjects such as the topic of Bariatric Surgery. The purpose of Bariatric surgery is to reduce the stomach’s ability to absorb food. By the means of a Gastric Bypass, the overall size of the patient’s stomach is reduced. With a sleeve Gastrectomy, surgeons remove a large portion of the stomach, which dramatically reduces the size of the stomach, keeping the patient from overeating. The Gastric Band procedure places a band around the stomach, which limits its’ diameter.

One of Dr. Mark Holterman’s main professional interests lies in stem cell therapy, as he is a co-founder of the Alliance for the Advancement of Cellular Therapies. (AACT)

Cellular therapy is the process by which healthy cells are transplanted in order to replace damaged cells and tissue. Transplanting cells can replace damaged cells or simply enhance the healing process. The most widely used version of the therapy is HSC, or hematopoietic stem cells, which is most effective in patients that have certain types of blood cancers (WeeklyOpinion). It’s the hope of many physicians that cellular therapy will eventually be used to treat a variety of other conditions including autoimmune disorders and tendinitis.

Dr. Mark Holterman has worked at the University of Illinois College of Medicine since 2011, as a professor ( He also works at the Advocate Christ Medical Center and the St. Francis Medical Center as a Pediatric Surgeon.
